GREENWOOD, Ind. - Fresh off its second consecutive runner-up finish at the Division III Men's Golf National Championship, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team added to its postseason accolades with College Sports Communicators Academic All-America honors as senior Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) and sophomore Pablo Castro (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) earned the recognition on the at-large teams, announced by the organization Wednesday, July 8.
With the duo's selection, the program has collected the award for the seventh straight year. Bai earned his first-team selection, holding a 3.98 grade point average while majoring in business. Castro adds a third-team honor to an already busy awards season with a 3.68 GPA in business.
The senior became just the second three-time CSC Academic All-American in program history, joining Quinn Clifford, who accomplished the feat a season ago. Bai concluded his career as a Titan as the program's record holder for most career rounds with 114. Bai's display of classroom excellence transferred over to the golf course as he carded a 72-hole 288 at this year's national championship, clipping his previous 72-hole mark. Bai wrapped up his stellar senior season with a Second Team All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin selection, following a trio of first-team selections the past three seasons. Through 10 tournaments, Bai assembled a 73.8 stroke average over 28 rounds. He graduated with a 73.61 career scoring average, 10th-best in program history.
Castro captured a breakout sophomore season, adding Third Team CSC Academic All-America honor to a long list of accomplishments. Castro's 3.68 GPA paired well with his PING First Team All-America selection and CCIW Elite 26 award recognition. The Palatine, Ill., native put together one of the most dominant seasons in the program's history, earning spring wins at the IWU Invite, April 3-4, and the CCIW Championship, April 29-May 1. The sophomore standout played in 11 total tournaments and combined for an impressive 21-under par through six spring tournaments. The Palatine, Ill., native posted eight top-10 finishes through 31 rounds and spearheaded IWU's runner-up finish at the national championship with a tie for seventh. Castro claimed First Team All-CCIW honors as well as CCIW Medalist and three CCIW Golfer of the Week distinctions.
