We had an amazing week celebrating National Skilled Care Week with an Americana theme here at the Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka!
Monday morning began with Bible study with Sandy as they continue their study through Proverbs. In the afternoon, residents got creative during craft time by designing their own American flag. We then took a road trip and travelled down Route 66 with Wendy. After dinner, everyone enjoyed listening to the AC Faith Young Group Singers.
Tuesday started with residents being entertained by 2nd Act with a skit and music. The group comes from the Washington Park District and does a wonderful job. After lunch, some of our residents went on a country ride while others had homemade donuts and toured historical sites around the USA with two of our faithful volunteers, Michelle and Gale. Following dinner, we watched travel videos and ended our day being blessed by the Congerville, Goodfield, Roanoke and Eureka singers.

Wednesday morning featured a fun time of reminiscing with Beth Unsicker. In the afternoon, some residents participated in a Flex and Stretch class with Whitley, while others enjoyed a fun-filled game of bingo. We all had red, white and blue drinks to refresh us from the afternoon activities. That evening, Connie shared an engaging presentation on the history of local towns.
Thursday morning, residents enjoyed listening to old Burma Shave Road sign jingles. In the early afternoon, the Eureka High School PACE class joined our residents to play card games. Before dinner, we enjoyed listening to Pickn’ and Grinin’ music with Freight Train Mike. The evening concluded with “quirky” history presented by Wendy, where we shared laughter and learned surprising facts about Route 66.
Friday morning was a special time where we had a memorial service for residents who passed away in the last 6 months. After lunch, everyone stayed active with Whitley during a Musicise exercise program. A friendly but competitive game of bingo took place before dinner, and the day wrapped up with music by Hope, Lena, Dale and friend.
All though out the week were special treats for staff and residents from red white and blue fruit cups, homemade apple pie, grilled burgers and hot dogs, fresh made pizza and more.
Six Ten Fitness
Happy National Fitness Month! Currently, Six Ten members, employees, and residents have walked 4-million steps so far in the month of May. We are walking across America and have made it to Indiana starting from Delaware.
For the walking challenge we are walking the American Discovery Trail. For those who may not be familiar with the American Discovery Trail, it is a collection of recreational trails and roads forming a coast-to-coast hiking and biking trail across the middle of the United States. It is the only non-motorized coast-to-coast trail. There are northern and southern routes when you reach Indiana/Ohio border. Together the total miles for the trail is 6,800 miles or approximately 17 million steps. The trail passes through more than 14 national parks, 16 national forests, and uses or connects to five National Scenic Trails, 10 National Historic Trails, and 23 National Recreation trails.
The first person to backpack the entire 6,800 miles in one continuous hike was Mike “Lion King” Daniel. He started from Cape Henlopen State Park on June 17, 2007 and ended at Point Reyes, California on November 5 2008. The first woman to backpack the entire 6,800 miles solo in one continuous hike was Briana DeSanctis. She started on January 1, 2022 and ended her journey on February 10, 2024.
Robert Sweetgall, founder of the Foundation for the Development of Cardiovascular Health, left his engineering job in Manhattan in 1981 to bring awareness of heart disease throughout America and set out to walk the perimeter of the U.S.A, which is a total of 10,608 miles. He did it again in the years 1984-1985 walking for 365 days straight carrying only a fanny pack. He would go on to walk across America a total of seven times, author 19 books, deliver over 100 planned and impromptu presentations and give more than 150 media interviews making him America’s leading advocate of walking for wellness.
