NAPERVILLE, Ill. - For the second consecutive week, the top-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team snagged two out of the three College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin weekly awards announced Monday, Oct. 26. Junior Alysa Lawton (Elmhurst, Ill.-IC Catholic Prep) claimed the conference's defensive player of the week, while senior Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) won setter of the week for their respective performances against Carthage College.
The duo helped the Green and White to a 1-0 week with a sweep over Carthage Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Shirk Center. Lawton led the match with 18 digs for six per set and mixed in six assists. Feeney, setting in a 6-2 system, is rewarded for a strong season which was proven with her 2000th assist against the Firebirds. In the sweep, she dished out a match-high 23 assists for her 13th match with 20-plus helpers. She also tallied nine digs and added an ace. The two accounted for 60.41 percent of IWU's assists and facilitated a defense that held the Firebirds to a .121 attack percentage.
With the award, Lawton collects her fifth of the season and seventh all-time, while Feeney grabs her first of the season and fourth in her career. Lawton becomes the first student-athlete to claim CCIW Defensive Player of the Week five times in a season since the award split in 2004.
Lawton, Feeney and the rest of the Titans travel to North Central College Wednesday, Oct. 28, for a 7 p.m. match. With a win, Illinois Wesleyan clinches its third consecutive CCIW regular season championship outright, completing the feat at 24-0 over the three seasons.
