A widely circulated list of “similarities” between John Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln has caught the imagination of millions since the 1960s. Alas, over time, researchers found a number of the claims to be untrue. Here is an abridged list of proven similarities.

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846 and elected president in 1860. John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946 and elected president in 1960.

The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters.

Both lost children while living in the White House. Both presidents were shot on a Friday. Both were shot in the head.

Successors

Successors

Both were succeeded by southerners named Johnson: Andrew Johnson (left) was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson (right) was born in 1908.

Assassins

Assassins

The assassins—John Wilkes Booth (left) and Lee Harvey Oswald (right)—are known by their three names. Both names have 15 letters. Both men were assassinated before their trials.
