Every November high school students who've wondered if teaching might be their path—who've imagined themselves leading classrooms, shaping young minds, or making a difference in education—gather at Illinois State University for a day that often shapes their journey to teaching.
The Future Teacher Conference, hosted by Illinois State University's College of Education, returns on November 6, 2026. Last year, over 1,300 high school students from 124 schools across Illinois walked through the doors to learn about careers in teaching. Many walked out with clarity, purpose, and a roadmap for their future in teacher education.
A Day Designed Around Discovery
The day opens with a keynote from an Illinois State teacher education alumnus who's been exactly where these students sit—curious and ready to learn. That authenticity matters. Students hear directly from someone who navigated the same questions they're asking now.
Students select three sessions from 44 different topics spanning 29 teaching endorsement interests. Want to explore special education? There's a session. Curious about educational administration? You'll find it. Wondering about the day-to-day realities of teaching middle school? Current educators and faculty break it down.
The Department of Special Education at Illinois State operates as one of the country's largest special education schools, giving students access to deep expertise in this critical field. The School of Teaching and Learning and Department of Educational Administration and Foundations round out comprehensive programming that covers every angle of educator preparation.
Students Teaching Students
Midday brings something textbooks can't provide: a student panel featuring current teacher education students at Illinois State. The question-and-answer format strips away the polished presentations and gets real. What's the coursework actually like? How do you balance student teaching with everything else? What surprised you most about the program? These conversations often prove more valuable than any brochure.
The table fair follows, where education programs and registered student organizations set up shop. Students wander, ask questions, collect information, and start picturing themselves in these spaces.
The Numbers Tell the Story
Conference organizers track satisfaction carefully. The results speak clearly: 94% of students and school personnel report high satisfaction with the conference. More importantly, participants consistently say the experience helps them decide whether teaching is their calling.
That clarity matters. Whether students leave confirmed in their teaching aspirations or realizing education isn't their path, they've gained something invaluable: certainty.
Beyond Students: Supporting Educators Too
The 130-plus school personnel who attend aren't just chaperones. Illinois State offers professional development sessions designed specifically for them, creating value for both students exploring teaching and educators already in the field. It's a recognition that learning never stops, even for those already leading classrooms.
Illinois Licensure Made Clear
Illinois State University offers a comprehensive range of Illinois licensure and endorsement programs. The college provides personalized education and support throughout the process—critical for students trying to navigate the sometimes-confusing path from interest to certification. The conference demystifies these requirements, showing students exactly what lies ahead.
