Normal, IL – July 31, 2026 – Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the film’s release, the Normal Theater hosts Wet Hot American Summer Fest from 5-10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 15, complete with themed games, food and a screening of the film.
First released in 2001, “Wet Hot American Summer” comically features absurd moments, teen tropes and nonsensical escalations as a group of 1980s camp counselors complete their final day of summer camp.
In honor of the film’s anniversary, the Normal Theater presents Wet Hot American Summer Fest, a camp-themed street festival that invites moviegoers to take part in a costume contest and classic camp games as teams compete in activities such as ring toss, axe throwing, arts and crafts, a costume contest and a karaoke talent show.
A portion of North Street in front of the Normal Theater will close for the festivities. Food trucks and beverages will be available during the festival, which concludes with camp awards and a screening of the film.

Fest tickets, which include the activities and film screening, are $10 and can be purchased on the Normal Theater website (NormalTheater.com).
About the film
Released in 2001, “Wet Hot American Summer,” directed by David Wain, is a cult classic film with a devoted following for its unique sense of humor and offbeat nostalgic comedy.
The basis of the film centers on the cast’s unfinished business at camp, which, for a group of teenagers in the 1980s, means navigating pent-up romantic frustrations, stress, relationship drama and a looming talent show.
“It’s absurd. And that’s what’s made it a cult favorite,” explains Normal Theater Manager Benny Young. “This film’s humor might not be for everyone, but those who embrace this kind of comedy – love it.”
The film, initially considered a flop at the box office, earning only a limited theatrical release, has risen in popularity thanks to streaming and digital availability.
Popularity of the film is also often credited to its star-studded cast, including Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper and Elizabeth Banks.
“Programming for our community means offering something for everyone. We’ve seen in recent years an increased interest in some of the more fringe or obscure titles,” says Civic Arts Manager Adam Fox. “That doesn’t mean we’re abandoning films from the Golden Age, just that we want all audiences to have the chance to experience their favorites on the big screen.”
