5 years ago (2005): Normal Community defeated Moline 25-11, 25-23 to win its fifth straight Class AA super-sectional volleyball title and advance to the state tourney at Redbird Arena. Lauren Montague led the Ironmen with 11 kills, Alyssa Trimpe had 10 and Emily Hanley added eight.

15 years ago (1995): University High senior Todd Mitchell, a two-sport standout in golf and baseball, opted to sign a national letter of intent to play baseball for Illinois State.

25 years ago (1985): Springfield Sacred Heart rallied from deficits of 12-3 in the second game and 11-4 in the final game to beat Normal Community 11-15, 15-12, 15-13 for the championship of the Lincoln Class AA Sectional volleyball tournament.

50 years ago (1960): A crowd estimated at 3,000 braved a night away from television to watch the Harlem Globetrotters strut their stuff and, incidentally, beat the Hawaii 50th Staters, 80-78, at the new Bloomington High School gymnasium, which has a listed capacity of 2,887.
