TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Northeastern State is changing its nickname from Redmen to RiverHawks.
The school is complying with an NCAA ban on ethnically or racially “hostile’’ or “abusive’’ nicknames, mascots and imagery at championship events.
Redmen was the moniker for Northeastern since 1924.
The Riverhawks was chosen after input from students, alumni, faculty, staff and the community. A 40-member task force assembled by president Larry Williams included representatives from the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band.
A new logo will be unveiled in the spring.
