Prairie Central High School wrestling coach Joe Cliffe will be honored later this month as the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Region IV Wrestling Coach of the Year.
As the Region IV Coach of the Year, he is among finalists for National Coach of the Year. Award presentation will be at the NHSACA's national convention June 29 in Branson, Mo.
Cliffe has led the Prairie Central program for 10 years. Previously, he was the head coach at Plano for 14 years and at Georgetown-Ridge Farm for four years.
A two-time Greco-Roman national champion and five-time Freestyle place-winner, Cliffe placed third in the 1972 Olympic Team Trials. He was a member of the 1973 World Games Team and placed sixth in Moscow.
Cliffe has coached 66 state qualifiers, 36 place-winners and 10 state champions. His teams have had 419 career dual meet wins. The 2003 Hawks placed fourth in the Dual Meet State Tournament and the 2004 squad qualified for the elite eight.
