Normal Community High School controlled the momentum from the service line Tuesday night and downed Unit 5 and Intercity rival Normal West, 25-11, 25-7, in a Big 12 Conference match at NCHS.
"We played well tonight and were offensively strong," said NCHS Coach Natalie Sutimek.
Vanessa Gerig, Jackie Gerig, and Jenny Menendez each recorded eight service points for the Ironmen, who improved to 24-7 overall and 7-1 in conference. Menendez added nine kills, and setter Jackie Gerig had 11 assists.
Laura Wilcox had four kills and two blocks for the Wildcats (21-12, 5-3). Kelsey Detweiler contributed 14 digs, and Allyson Keith contributed 12 assists.
U High downs Mahomet
Ashlee Sang registered 10 digs and nine service points as University High (27-6, 13-0) remained unbeaten in the Corn Belt Conference with a 25-18, 25-13 win over Mahomet-Seymour on Senior Night at Normal. Abby Bee chipped in a team-high 14 assists for the Pioneers.
"With all the distractions and emotions of Senior Night, I thought we really got into the rhythm of our game in the second game,'' said U High coach Cathy Sanders, who saw her Pioneers race to a commanding 16-2 lead in game two.
Mahomet-Seymour (20-10, 8-5) was led by Mel Weimer with 14 assists and Dani Bunch with six kills. Jillian Ryan chipped in 15 digs for the Bulldogs.
BHS clinches share of title
Georgia Tech recruit Ashley Beyer and Latrice Wood combined for 16 kills and Bloomington clinched a share of the Big 12 Conference title with a 25-17, 25-9 win over Decatur MacArthur at Bloomington.
Illinois State recruit Kristin Stauter had 22 assists for the Purple Raiders (29-4, 8-0), and Jessica Spence contributed 10 service points and five digs.
Saints sweep Pontiac
Senior setter Kristyn Mysker had 11 service points and nine assists as Central Catholic celebrated Senior Night with a 25-20, 25-9 victory over Pontiac (10-15, 4-9) in a Corn Belt Conference match at Bloomington.
Megan Schmidt led the Saints (19-9, 11-2) in kills with 10 while Megan Fitzgerald added seven. Stephanie Lamb contributed eight assists. Ashley Timmerman paced Pontiac (10-15) with four kills, and Loni Mackinson had eight assists.
Olympia downs Eureka
Tifani Gordon had 16 digs, and Lydia Schmidgall collected seven service points, five kills and two blocks to lift Olympia to a 25-11, 25-22 Corn Belt Conference win at Eureka.
Prairie Central rallies
Kenber Galloway collected 11 kills and eight digs, and Kari Diller handed out 24 assists as Prairie Central rallied for a 22-25, 25-15, 25-21 Corn Belt Conference win at Rantoul
Hartem claims crown
Lacey Shelabarger and Kelsi Ubbenga had 15 and 11 kills, respectively and Hartsburg-Emden clinched the Tomhawk Conference championship with a 22-25, 25-20, 25-13 win over Illini Bluffs at Hartsburg.
The Stags (18-11) also received 64 assists from Jillyn Cross and 14 service points from Brandi Johnson.
Roanoke-Benson falters
Abby Schneider had four service points and three kills in Roanoke-Benson's 25-18, 25-16 loss to Lowpoint-Washburn in Tri-County Conference action. Kelsey Sauder added three kills for the Rockets (7-18, 3-4).
Clinton posts win
Sarah Blythe had six kills and Samantha Moore provided nine assists to lead Clinton to a 25-15, 25-15 Okaw Valley Conference win over host Argenta-Oreana.
Defensive leaders for the Maroons (10-22, 2-6) were Morgan Smith with three blocks and Shelby Huffman with 11 digs. Huffman also had six aces.
Mount Pulaski triumphs
Christina Stoll had a team-high 10 kills and Jeri Kaye Turner added 14 assists as Mount Pulaski defeated Illini Central, 25-17, 25-14, at Mount Pulaski. Annie Cave paced Illini Central (18-10) with five kills.
Lincoln falls to Glenwood
Ashley Bonaparte recorded 13 assists and Jamie McFadden had nine kills and three blocks in a losing cause as Lincoln (18-15, 5-2) dropped a 25-16, 25-23 Central State Eight Conference decision to Chatham Glenwood at Lincoln.
Dwight stumbles
Despite a team-high eight kills from Carly Perschnick and six service points apiece from Stephanie Humbert and Chaney Tambling, Dwight (22-6-2, 7-3) fell to Manteno, 25-23, 25-16 in Interstate Eight Conference action at Dwight.
McLean County Tournament
- Haley Thurmond recorded 11 kills and two blocks and Kate Poorbaugh added 22 assists as No. 2 seed Deer Creek-Mackinaw swept No. 7 Heyworth, 25-14, 25-13, in a quarterfinal match of the Mclean County Tournament at Lexington.
- No. 12 seed Flanagan, behind 15 assists from Anna Delheimer and seven kills from Kenzie Mogged, knocked off No. 5 seed Tremont, 25-15, 25-23 in first-round action. Karie Timmerman added four kills and four blocks for the Falcons.
SVC Tournament
- Delaney Bettermann and Monte Villagament combined for 16 service points as CPCI claimed a 25-23, 25-19 win over St. Joseph-Ogden in the Sangamon Valley Conference Tournament at Gilman.
- Iroquois West outlasted Momence 25-21, 20-25, 26-24, behind 14 assists from Cassie Velazquez and eight kills by Emilee Mitchell. The Raiders also suffered a 25-20, 26-24 loss to St. Thomas More.
