High school girls cross country report 10/27/12

No. 2 U High girls defend Class 2A sectional crown: University High School’s girls cross country team, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 2A, won the Peoria Notre Dame Sectional on Saturday, scoring 54 points.

Host Notre Dame tallied 119 in second. Normal West placed seventh (178) to miss the final qualifying spot for next Saturday’s state meet at Peoria by 14 points. Bloomington was 15th (354).

The Wildcats did advance Emily Brelsfoard, who placed fourth on the 2.94-mile course at Illinois Central College in 17 minutes, 42 seconds. Galesburg’s Stephanie Saey won in 17:29.

The title was U High’s third overall and second in a row. Sydney Billingsley led the way in fifth (17:59).

Also scoring for the Pioneers were Shannan Supan (7th, 18:13), Ashley LaFayette (13th, 18:51), Alexandra Walch (14th, 18:58) and Christy Hulett (15th, 19:01).

Tri-Valley 3rd at Elmwood: No. 8-ranked Tri-Valley scored 134 points to advance third in the Elmwood 1A Sectional behind No. 3 Rochester (57) and No. 5 Petersburg Porta (98).

Central Catholic’s Alex Van Hoof placed second in 18:28 to qualify individually behind Rochester’s Taylor Bartolozzi (18:14).

Other individual qualifiers were Olympia’s Naomi Springer (7th, 18:36), Delavan’s Maddison Zimmer (9th, 18:36) and Central Catholic’s Faith Wieland (10th, 18:37).

Tri-Valley was led by Athena Kulb (6th, 18:36) and Jess Clarke (11th, 18:38).

Eureka placed eighth (194), Central Catholic ninth (226), Heyworth 11th (307) and Deer Creek-Mackinaw 20th (518).

James, Baldwin advance at Oregon: El Paso-Gridley senior Julie James, who won a sectional in 2010, triumphed at the Oregon 1A Sectional in 18:55.

She advanced individually as did Fieldcrest fourth-placer Maria Baldwin (19:16). EPG placed 10th (319) and Fieldcrest 12th (325).

Mahomet-Seymour 5th at Decatur: No. 24-ranked Mahomet-Seymour scored 198 points to advance fifth from the MacArthur 2A Sectional.

Freshman Lauren Whitehouse led the Bulldogs in eighth (18:56).

Prairie Central 7th at Lisle: Prairie Central scored 175 points to place seventh in the Lisle 1A Sectional where Gardner-Dwight was 15th (417). No area entrants advanced.

PBL 19th at Effingham: PBL scored 457 points for 19th in the Effingham St. Anthony 1A Sectional. Audrey Bloomquist led the Panthers in 26th (20:01). It took 19:42 to advance individually.
