North wins Optimist qualifier
Drew North of El Paso shot 4-over-par 148 to win the boys 16-18 year-old division in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship Midwest Qualifier last week at Piper Glen Golf Club in Springfield. North advances to the Optimist Junior International July 20-30 at PGA National at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Jackie Leonard of Streator and Kelsey Erickson of Mahomet tied for second in the girls 16-18 division with 171 totals. Alex Burge of Bloomington was fifth in the boys 14-15 division with a 154 total.
Johnson, Sunday net titles
Tim Johnson of Bloomington and Jim Sunday of Atlanta were low gross winners last weekend in the Central Illinois Senior Association (CISA) Golf Tour event at Springfield. Johnson won the 45-plus division with rounds of 75 and 78 for a 153 total. Sunday prevailed in the 55-plus division with a 77 and 80 for a 157 total.
Guy Percy of Gibson City was second in the 45-plus group with a pair of 77s for a 154 total. Jim Petrov of Tremont was second in the 63-plus division, shooting 76 and 78 for a 154 total. Sam Rainey of Bloomington tied for first in low net in the 45-plus division with a 137 net total.
Through five events, Sunday leads the 55-plus low gross and low net season standings.
CIS Xplosion earns title
The Central Illinois Select U-10 Xplosion girls team capped its season by winning the championship at the 25th annual River City Soccer Classic this past weekend at Peoria. The team was 3-1 while playing in the U-10/11 division, winning the title with a 5-1 victory over the U-11 Freeport Fire.n;In pool play, the Xplosion beat the host Peoria SC Lady Eagles and the Geneseo SC Power and lost 2-1 to the SASA U-11's.
The Xplosion also won the Milwaukee FC Indoor Spring Invitational, the Socker's FC Nike Cup Classic and the CIS Spring Invitational. With a 19-3-2 record during the spring and an 11-7-7 mark last fall, the Xplosion finished 30-10-9 and outscored their opponents, 169-69.
Team members included Sydney Billingsley, Kyleigh Block, Tori Doubet, Natalie Fletcher, Sara Hovren, Rachel Johnson, Natalie Pitts, Devon Robbins, Hannah Rodgers, Erin Roegner, Alison Seger, Mackenzie Taylor, Abby Thompson and Marisa Zamudio.n; Coaches were Mike Fletcher and Mike Pitts. The team was managed by Anne Roegner.
BNSC Blast wins tourney
The Bloomington-Normal Soccer Club's Under 11 girls team, the Blast, won the Muscatine (Iowa) Summer Classic on Sunday by defeating the Mossville Sporting Football Club's '95 girls team, 6-1. The Blast went 4-0-1, defeating Cedar Rapids in the semifinals to get to the championship game.
The BNSC Blast is ranked 11th in the state out of more than 50 teams in the Under 11 age group by gotsoccer.com , a Web site widely used by youth soccer organizations and coaches. The Blast was a finalist in three other tournaments this spring: the Central Illinois Select Spring Invitational, Bloomington; The Mid America Shootout, Schaumburg; and the Spring Best of the Midwest Tournament, Naperville.
Team members are Holly Gregory, Alex Van Hoof, Carissa Vaughn, Jenna Ayers, Lindsey Wiggs, Maggie Turner, Carley Pederson, Kayla Palmer, Kennedy Wardlow, Hailey Summers, Rachel Bradd, Lindsey Caldwell and Janelle Dedic. The Blast is coached by Steven Gregory.

Hanson fourth in Nike meet
Pontiac High School graduate Phil Hanson placed fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 16 feet, 7\ inches in the Nike Outdoor National Track and Field Championships last weekend.
Taylor Troemel, a Normal Community graduate, tied for eighth in the girls pole vault at 11-10}.
