DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake needed a record-setting free throw performance to hold off the Illinois State women's basketball team Saturday night.

The Bulldogs made 33 of a Knapp Arena record 53 free throw attempts, including 13 of 19 in overtime, to claim a 76-73 victory and run their home winning streak over ISU to 12 games.

The loss snapped a three-game ISU winning streak and dropped the Redbirds' overall record to 8-10 and MVC mark to 3-6. Senior forward Holly Hallstrom led ISU with 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

Drake (9-9, 5-4), coming off a 92-87 double-overtime loss to league-leading Indiana State, snapped a three-game skid.

"This was a big win for us," said Drake coach Amy Stephens. "We were down nine (44-35) and they (Illinois State) had the ball. We showed a lot of courage coming back in the second half."

Junior forward Jill Martin scored seven of her 19 points in overtime to lead Drake, including a 3-pointer to start the extra period which put the Bulldogs ahead 61-58. Martin also grabbed 13 rebounds in posting her 19th career double-double.

After Hallstrom made two free throws to pull the Redbirds within 61-60, Martin keyed a 5-0 run with a basket and free throw extending Drake's lead to 66-60 with 2:33 remaining in the extra session. Drake iced the game by connecting on four of its last six free throw attempts in the final 30 seconds.

Amber Shelton scored 14 points for ISU, which committed 22 turnovers while shooting 44 percent (28 of 63). Megan McCracken had 13 points for the Redbirds, and Kristi Cirone had 12.

ISU outrebounded Drake 45-39 but made only 11 of 18 free throw tries. Cirone, Tiffany Hudson and Lashawn Johnson all fouled out for ISU. The Redbirds were whistled for 35 fouls overall while Drake finished with 17 fouls.

Linda Sayavongchanh added 12 points for Drake, and Brandy Dahir and Lindsay Whorton had 10 each. Drake shot 40 percent (21 of 53) while committing 12 turnovers.

ISU will begin a three-game game homestand Saturday with a 4:05 p.m. game against Indiana State at Redbird Arena.
