French philosopher and author Albert Camus called autumn “a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” It’s an apt description when the woods are filled with leaves of red, orange, yellow and purple.

Running about 26 miles from Alta to Toulon, the Rock Island State Trail opened in 1989 as Illinois’ first rail-to-trail conversion. It roughly follows the route of the former Rock Island Line, subject of an old folk song, and a small portion of the former Chicago, Burlington and Quincy rail line.
