George Chaney

NORMAL — George Carper Chaney, 91, of Normal, formerly of Albuquerque, N.M., died at 3:15 a.m. Saturday (March 6, 2010) at Sugar Creek Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Normal.

Cremation rites were accorded. There will be a private family service with interment at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, N.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Normal Public Library or to BroMenn Hospice. Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

George was born Nov. 11, 1918, in Independence, Kan., the son of Earl and Ola Bingler Chaney. He was one of six children, all of whom preceded him in death. George married Sarah Suanne Schock on Nov. 2, 1944, in Evanston. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, William (Susan) Chaney of Normal; a daughter, Betsey (Jim) Klein of Greeley, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents.

George was a graduate of the University of Kansas Medical School in 1944. From November 1944, he served in the Pacific, where his unit took part in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns and the Chinese occupation. In 1950, he became associate pathologist at the Latter-Day Saints Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was called back to active naval service in 1953 during the Korean War, where he was stationed at Mare Island Naval Hospital. He remained in the naval reserve and was commissioned lieutenant commander in 1954. After the Navy, he was an associate in pathology at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind. In 1955, he became a pathologist with the Van Atta Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M. He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening.

George will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He kept his wonderful sense of humor until he passed. He was a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque, N.M.
