The running backs coach oversees construction projects. The line coach outlines incentives to State Farm agents. The assistant line coach peddles Pepsi products, and the special teams coordinator can hook you up with a new fan belt.

If that sounds like a mixed bag, it is. There is nothing typical about Central Catholic High School's football coaching staff, yet it works for the Saints and head coach Bobby Moews … who, by the way, is superintendent of parks for the city of Bloomington.

"They all have different personalities and I think they enjoy coming together every day, as much for the camaraderie as the football coaching aspect," said Moews, whose 17th Central team meets Aurora Christian at 7 p.m. today for the Class 4A state championship.

"They like each other, and they're all really focused on what we're trying to do here and how to do it. They don't need any guidance."

Special teams coordinator Bobby Crawford, assistant parts manager for Barker Motor Co., has been on the staff since 2001.

The rest of the varsity assistants have been there longer: 26 years for kicking coach Bud Concklin, 21 for defensive coordinator Mike Moews, 16 for running backs coach Mark Parker, 15 for line coach Jim Malinowski and 13 for assistant line coach Isy Hoomanawanui.

Another Moews brother, Steve, has helped with the varsity for many years and also coached the freshman team this season.

"We all respect each other for what we do," said Parker, superintendent with Johnston Contractors, Inc. "None of us are teachers, which is the weirdest thing.

"Bobby doesn't micromanage. We all have a job to do and we do it and we stay out of each other's business doing it. I think that's what's made us last this long."

They are bonded by a love for football and Central Catholic. All but Parker and Hoomanawanui graduated from the school, and both of them have sent children to Central. Parker's son, Drake, was a captain on the 9-0 freshman team this year.

Malinowski played for the Saints in the mid-1980s. He came back as line coach in 1994 and helped Central win the Class 3A state title. One of his linemen that year was Crawford.

"It's the whole family atmosphere," Malinowski said. "We laugh on the sideline about Bobby (Moews) getting excited. After all these years, it's almost like brothers. Nothing's personal and it's all family.

"Mark Kraft was my line coach and I thought the world of him. He went to school here. It's kind of the history of this place. You want to give back and that's what we've been able to do."

They don't do it for the money. Each of the assistants receives a one-time check in October, and it isn't much. Crawford estimated it comes to about "10 cents an hour, if that," but said most would do it for nothing.

"It's a big extended family," he said. "We have fun on and off the field. If you're having a bad day, you know at 3:30 you'll come out here and you're going to smile and laugh and have fun for a couple of hours."

Mike Moews said his pay averaged out one year to "about a nickel a mile," and less per hour. Still, he looks forward to practice every day.

"It keeps you young," he said. "We've been blessed with great kids. They like to have fun, but when you blow the whistle, it's work time and they do everything you ask."

The coaches said their wives have played a big role, being supportive of the time they invest in a part-time job with little monetary reward.

"At the high school level, you're never going to do it for the money," Bobby Moews said. "It's just a little more pronounced here."
