COVELL - A Danvers woman died in a two-vehicle accident Saturday night near Covell, McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling said in a statement.
Doris Kaufman, 91, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:10 p.m., Kimmerling said. Metcom was notified of the accident involving a van and a pickup truck just west of 1100 North 600 East in Dale Township, approximately one and a half miles west of Covell, at 8:39 p.m.
Kaufman and her family were returning from a birthday party in Minier when the accident occurred, Kimmerling said.
Kaufman, who was a passenger in a rear seat of the van, was found without obvious signs of life by rescue personnel. The remaining passengers of both vehicles were transported to local hospitals, Kimmerling said.
Preliminary evidence suggests a pickup truck was westbound on 1100 North (Stanford Covell Road) when it struck the van, which was eastbound, in a head-on collision, Kimmerling said.
The McLean County sheriff's police department and the McLean County Coroner's office continue to investigate the incident.
Weather conditions, specifically wind, may have been a factor in the crash, Kimmerling said.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.
