How Time Flies for August 25, 2008:
100 years ago
Aug. 25, 1908: Former McLean County School Superintendent John Wren and family are moving to Springfield, Ohio, where they have friends. Mr. Wren ran afoul of the law with some missing funds in the superintendent's office in 1906. He has been working in Danville lately.
75 years ago
Aug. 25, 1933: Ex-Chicago gangster Al Capone is working eight hours a day at a shoe repair machine at the Atlanta penitentiary. He has lost 20 pounds but is still overweight. Capone still blames the papers for ruining his deal for a three year sentence. He's serving eleven years.
50 years ago
Aug. 25, 1958: Authorities raided the Subway Club, 810 West Chestnut, again over the weekend. It's an after-hours spot licensed as a social club. States Attorney Wayne Townley wants it closed as a public nuisance. This time there will be no charges due to lack of evidence.
25 years ago
Aug. 26, 1983: After fifteen years as ISU police chief, John Newbold is retiring. He was chief during the campus unrest in the late sixties and early seventies. "But when you look at what happened at other universities it was comparatively quiet (at ISU)," he said.
