100 years ago
April 22, 1908: Workers are tearing down the old frame building housing the Christian Science church at Monroe and Prairie. A modern stone church will take its place. The new structure should be ready to occupy late this winter or early spring 1909 (it's gone now.)
75 years ago
April 22, 1933: The Roy Taylor grain elevator in Hudson was destroyed by fire last night. No one knows yet how it started. The elevator was said to contain quantities of corn and oats. The flames lit the night sky and were plainly visible in Bloomington-Normal.
50 years ago
April 22, 1958: Frank "Bucky" O'Connor, head basketball coach at the University of Iowa, was killed in an auto accident at Waterloo. He was the brother of Burton O'Connor, the athletic director at University High School in Normal.
25 years ago
April 22, 1983: A second defendant was convicted in last November's robbery and murder of William Spates, 66, Bloomington. The jury deliberated 6 1/2 hours in the case of Emil Wieland, 22, formerly of Bloomington. Wieland and an accomplice got $1.72 in the robbery.
