Director wants to team with Peoria-based council
LINCOLN - Lincoln and Logan County Development Partnership director Joel Smiley believes any economic development that comes to Central Illinois is good for Logan County, even if significant proposed projects are not destined for Logan County.
"Logan County residents may find jobs or construction materials may be bought here, even if the new factory or business isn't locating here," Smiley said. "Or people may relocate to Logan County or spend their money here. We need to take a regional look at economic development, and not just specifically in our county. The ultimate goal of course, is to spur economic development here, but sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture."
Smiley is the guiding force behind an effort to team with the Peoria-based Economic Development Council for Central Illinois.
In August, Smiley and a group of Lincoln and Logan County community leaders met with the council to discuss joining forces. Atlanta Mayor Bill Martin was among them.
"We're moving right along, but everyone has agreed to it in principle," Martin said. "It's a process that takes some time. The county boards for the participating counties must all pass resolutions to add us, which they have done and then it has to be sent to the State of Illinois. But since the counties involved are onboard, it should happen soon."
Smiley said that as part of the group, the Lincoln and Logan County Development Partnership would have access to grant and economic review studies. Partnerships can divide costs and help with networking.
The alliance would allow for greater visibility at trade shows and conferences, Smiley said.
Martin said the council wants to promote economic development throughout a region rather than a specific location.
"There are four main reasons for the regional effort concept," Smiley said. "Additional federal funding, assistance with intergovernmental agreements, the ability to share resources and becoming part of a regional effort will all help Lincoln and Logan County in the future."
The counties already involved with the Economic Development Council are Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford, Stark and Marshall.
