FARMER CITY - Federal stimulus money will help put an elevator at Schneider Elementary School, making it handicapped accessible.
The timing couldn't be better, said Principal Susan Wilson, because two incoming disabled students will need help this fall getting from the first floor to the second.
The $189,000 is targeted for special education needs.
The lift will be a "ton of help" in getting the building very close to meeting federal disability requirements. Some minor restroom modifications also will be made, such as installation of an accessible sink and toilet.
The Blue Ridge School District also has preliminary approval for $59,000 to help at-risk students through the Title I program.
Superintendent Jay Harnack said the money will not significantly impact the school's operating budget, since there are strict requirements on how funds can be used.
For example, the money cannot be used for already-budgeted items such as salaries and supplies.
Title I money is slightly less restricted, but still cannot be used for everyday items such as salaries. Wilson said the school likely would purchase equipment and computer software.
