PONTIAC - A Chenoa woman has decided against a jury trial in favor of a bench trial on charges she provided alcohol to a party after which a teenager died.

Anne Haugen, 50, is charged with unlawfully contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, a Class 4 felony, and unlawful sale of alcoholic beverages, a Class A misdemeanor.

A jury trial was originally scheduled on the court's June calendar, but Haugen and her attorney, James Casson, waived that right Friday in favor of a bench trial, meaning Livingston County Associate Judge Robert Travers will determine if Haugen is guilty.

The trial is scheduled for July 11 and is expected to take at least half a day, Casson said. Both sides have said they were ready to begin the trial.

The charges against Haugen stem from a party Feb. 17, 2007, before which Haugen allegedly put a keg of beer in the trunk of her daughter's car during halftime of a school basketball game in Fairbury. Prosecutors say that beer was consumed at the party.

Travis Steidinger, 16, of Fairbury was at the party and fled the residence along with several others into nearby fields when someone yelled "Cops!" Everyone returned a short time later, except Steidinger, who was found dead by a passer-by the next morning in a field one mile west of Forrest and 20 feet from County Road 825 North.

Steidinger apparently walked three miles in the snow and below-zero weather while only wearing a polo shirt, T-shirt, jeans, underwear and socks. He was not wearing shoes or a coat. A coroner's jury later ruled the death to be accidental and caused by hypothermia.

Toxicology results later said his blood alcohol level was 0.031, less than half of the legal limit for adult drivers of 0.08.

Haugen is also listed as one of several defendants in a civil suit filed by Steidinger's family. The suit asks for an amount of $50,000 or more from Haugen.
