100 years ago
Jan. 8, 1909: The streets of Hudson were almost deserted all day Wednesday because the temperature was four to six below zero. It was only Monday night that a welcome rain fell in nearby Old Town Township. The rain was welcome because farmers' wells were running low.
75 years ago
Jan. 8, 1934: President Roosevelt told a joint session of Congress, "We are winning. The depression is whipped." But in Illinois folks are still stealing coal for heating their homes. The railroads say coal thieves are more trouble than hoboes who only steal rides on freight trains.
50 years ago
Jan. 8, 1959: The Silver Dollar, a pool hall in the Front Street block being cleared for a parking lot, was apparently quite a gambling joint in recent years. In the demolition process, a stash of gambling "stuff" has turned up. The Silver Dollar has moved down the street.
25 years ago
Jan. 8, 1984: Pilot Dave Shinneman had to land his small plane on US 150 near Downs when he ran low on fuel. Once he fueled up, police wouldn't let him take off on the highway. So Shinneman will have to remove the wings, get a trailer, and tow it.
