LINCOLN - An assisted living facility cleared a major hurdle for a proposed expansion project Monday when the City Council approved changes to a sewer upgrade on the city's west side.
City attorney Bill Bates has been working on the agreement for several months with Lincoln Towne Center LLC, the parent company of St. Clara's Manor.
"There was some language that didn't protect the city enough," Bates said. "We asked them to carry the proper insurance and they agreed to do that and we added some other language to ensure that the city is not liable for any potential problems."
St. Clara's Manor will install a 10-inch sewer line on the property, located behind the former Wal-Mart complex.
Sewer systems manager Dave Kitzmiller said he and city engineer Mark Mathon have been working with officials from St. Clara's Manor and are satisfied the city's sewer system can handle the additional sewage.
Some upgrades may be in store for that area of the sewer system if officials from Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital continue with plans to build on the city's western edge.
"We don't foresee any problems at this point," Kitzmiller said. "We will still keep an eye on this as we move forward."
St. Clara's Manor officials have not yet set an estimated groundbreaking or completion date.
Siren purchased: The stormy summer weather took its toll on the storm warning siren at City Hall and the council approved the low bid from Lincolnland Communications to install a new system.
The council approved a bid of $13,824. An installation date was not set.
In another matter, the city approved the official city Christmas ornament, a depiction of Logan County's second courthouse and the site of where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous speech on Oct. 16, 1858.
