Two charged in case of retail theft

NORMAL - A Springfield woman and a St. Louis man are charged with two counts each of retail theft. Tony Ashford and Frieda Williams, both 49, remained in custody in lieu of posting $3,000.

Court documents said store employees at the Von Maur department store at 301 S. Veterans Parkway in Normal told police Williams put dresses into her purse while Ashford blocked others' view of her. They then passed all points of sale and exited the store without paying for the dresses. Williams was then observed returning to the store and placing the stolen items under a clothing rack, the document said. The dresses are estimated at $809. Officers who arrived on the scene stopped the vehicle in which the suspects were leaving. They found items in the car that court documents said were taken in a separate incident that occurred earlier in the day at a J.C. Penny store.

Cocaine - A 22-year-old Bloomington man is charged with possession of cocaine. Darnell Baker of Moonstone Court remained in custody in lieu of posting $2,000.

Court documents said Bloomington police found cocaine in Baker's car and coat during a traffic stop.
