What: 15th annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of McLean County

When: noon Friday, June 26, to noon Saturday, June 27

Where: Normal Community West High School track, 501 N. Parkside Road

Why: To raise money for research, patient services and public education

How it works: Teams of 10 to 15 participants raise money, then walk or run in relay fashion. Some people bring tents and stay overnight.

Special events: On June 26, 3 p.m. youth victory lap, 4 p.m. survivor dinner, 7 p.m. survivor victory lap, 7:30 p.m. caregivers lap, 9:30 p.m. luminaria ceremony; on June 27, 9:30 a.m. fight back ceremony

Goals: $620,000 raised by 180 teams and 1,800 to 2,000 participants

Relay fact: McLean County's Relay For Life is the largest such relay in Illinois

Recession impact: "The recession is hitting a lot of people right now. Any amount (for relay) is welcome." - Pam Garrett

Why relay keeps growing: "Relay is a family event because cancer affects the entire family." - Marcia Ripsch

Team registration fee: $125 for returning teams, $50 for new teams
