BLOOMINGTON - A Bloomington furniture store changed its name and concept when it moved locations. Rooms Direct, which recently opened in the former Cohen's Furniture building at 1344 E. Empire St. in Bloomington, continues to set up store displays in preparation of next week's grand opening, said Manager David Namoff, whose wife, Megan Namoff, owns the business.

"By the grand opening, we'll be ready to roll," Namoff said.

Rooms Direct, which also has a location in Washington, will celebrate its grand opening in Bloomington on Sept. 20, said Namoff, who has 24 years of experience in the furniture business in Bloomington, starting with the former Direct Factory Outlet.

The furniture store, previously named Warehouse Furniture, moved from an 18,000-square-foot space at Bloomington's Lakewood Plaza, which it occupied for about two years, to the 30,000-square foot building. The business had a temporary lease in the strip mall at Veterans Parkway and Clearwater Avenue.

Home Choice, which is owned by Rent-A-Center, will move into a 9,000-square-foot portion of the vacated space in the first quarter of 2009, said Sarah Benson, spokeswoman for Casto, a real estate services firm based in Ohio that owns and manages all of the property at Lakewood Plaza except the former K's Merchandise site.

The business that sells appliances, furniture and home electronics will have a five-year lease, Benson said.

Meanwhile, Rooms Direct also will take on a different look in its new location.

The company now focuses on product displays and room packages to make it easy for customers to see a room as it could be set up in their houses, Namoff said.

"People do like to see things set up," Namoff said. "A lot of people can't envision their home. Now you can."

The larger location also means more of a selection for mattresses, sofas, bedroom sets and dinettes, Namoff said.

Previously considered a discount furniture store, Rooms Direct also has more middle- to upper-middle priced furniture as it has added pieces from Lane Furniture, Best Chairs and the Vera Wang series from Serta Mattress, Namoff said. Ashley Furniture is still the brand with the most selection.

Rooms Direct also will offer a broader selection of accessories, such as wall art and area rugs, Namoff said.

"It, again, kind of puts that whole room together," he said.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
