Ozinga to host fundraiser with Dick Cheney
SPRINGFIELD -- The Republican candidate hoping to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Jerry Weller in Congress will get a hand in raising campaign money Wednesday from Vice President Dick Cheney. Martin Ozinga, who’s vying for the 11th Congressional District seat against Illinois Senate Majority Leader Debbie Halvorson, D-Crete, and Green Party candidate Jason Wallace, will host Cheney as his guest in the district at a closed-door fundraiser in Homer Glen. The vice presidential visit comes as the candidates seek to seal up votes with a little more than three weeks until Election Day. Cheney is not expected to make any public remarks as he flies in and out of Chicago for what amounts to a three-hour visit. Tickets are $500 per person. For $2,300, attendees can get a photo of themselves with Cheney. The Halvorson campaign sought on Monday to tie the event to the recent global economic meltdown, saying Cheney’s visit shows Ozinga is “out of touch” with middle class voters. “Dick Cheney is symbolic of everything that’s been wrong with the past eight years,” Halvorson campaign chief Brian Doory said in a statement. The 11th district stretches from Chicago’s south suburbs to Bloomington-Normal. |
