OKAWVILLE -- Washington County's coroner says a 27-year-old farmer is dead after suffocating in a corn-filled bin. Coroner Thomas Coy says Nick Rennegarbe died Monday at his family's farm near Addieville.

Coy says Rennegarbe and his uncle were working on top of the large grain bin when Nick Rennegarbe apparently lost his footing and fell in.

His uncle was unable to rescue him, and Rennegarbe apparently suffocated quickly in the bin that had no oxygen and a temperature of 128 degrees.

Rennegarbe played basketball and baseball at Okawville High School in the late 1990s, then went on to referee high school and college basketball.

Services are pending with Campagna Funeral Home in Okawville.

" This breaks my heart for the family, especially the uncle. Is there a safety harness that can be worn when working on top of bins like this? I know it would probably be a pain in the keester, but would totally be worth it. From what I understand you just sink into the corn like quicksand and don't have a chance. Rest in peace, Nick. "

" This happened to a young man who worked on my second cousin's farm outside of LeRoy some 45 or 50 years ago. It is SO sad when this happens. Sympathies to the family and friends. "

" I knew this guy from HS. This is sad and it could happen to anyone! These days with Farmers in the fields trying to make a living it could happen close to home. Prayers! "
