Dec. 1
5 years ago (2002): Chicago Mount Carmel put the brakes on Bloomington’s high-powered offense and cruised to a 31-0 victory in the Class 6A state football championship game. … New Lenox Providence also showed a stifling defense to beat Pontiac 42-0 for the Class 5A title.
15 years ago (1992): University High turned up the defensive heat in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 61-58 girls basketball victory over Prairie Central. Senior forward Cindy Otto scored eight of her 13 points in the second quarter to help the Pioneers.
25 years ago (1982): It was football without pads, the kind of physical basketball game Illinois State head coach Bob Donewald and Redbird center Rick Lamb relish. Lamb led ISU with 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Redbirds banged out a 54-45 victory over Northern Illinois.
50 years ago (1957): Ron DeNardo, former all-state quarterback from Trinity High School, finally got his chance to play for Notre Dame in the closing minutes of the Southern Cal game. He was used as a halfback and gained eight yards the only time he carted the pigskin. He also was in on two tackles and batted down one pass.
