Pontiac United Way halfway toward goal

PONTIAC — The glass is definitely half full for United Way of Pontiac.

The charity’s board of directors met Friday afternoon to celebrate the halfway point of its fundraising campaign. The board met at the United Way sign at the intersection of Mill and Howard Streets to drop the 50 percent marker into the sign.

United Way of Pontiac President Bert Harms said that the campaign was going very well this year and thanked the community residents for all of their efforts.

This year’s goal is the biggest yet at $202,000, and so far the campaign has raised an estimated $101,340.

Those interested in helping the United Way can go to the office at 210 N. Plum St. or send a donation to United Way of Pontiac, P.O. Box 534, Pontiac, IL 61764.

Booths, food planned at Streator ‘market’

STREATOR — “Light Up Streator Marketplace” will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Park Place Conference Center, 406 E. Hickory.

The event will feature 35 booths and food concessions.

State recognizes Streator schools

STREATOR — Four Streator grade schools have been recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education.

Kimes, Centennial, Oakland Park and Northlawn schools received spotlight distinction based on student results from last year. The schools must show 50 percent of their low-income students met No Child Left Behind goals.

The same schools also received academic improvement awards for a 7.5 percent increase in math and reading scores.

Emington man gets District 2 board seat

PONTIAC — Bob Young of Emington has been sworn in as County Board District 2 member, replacing Andrew Thompson, who resigned in October.

Board Chairman Bill Flott said Thompson will be missed.

“I enjoyed my time on the board and I will be back,” Thompson said. “It might be 15 or 20 years from now but I will be back.”

San Jose church named meal site

LINCOLN — Central Illinois Economic Development Corp. is working with San Jose Christian Church to provide a meal site in the church’s Fellowship Hall at 205 E. Race St.

Seniors aged 60 or older and their spouses can participate. A social time will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Meals will be available for a suggested donation of $3. Participants won’t be denied a meal if they cannot pay.

The Social Senior Spot opens Dec. 4. To order a meal or arrange for a ride, call (217) 732-2159, Ext. 240.
