He reached the semifinals with drives of 322, 327 and 329 yards. Thomas was the 1997 Illinois PGA Open Long Drive champion.
15 years ago (1992): Central Catholic’s 5-foot-6 Joe Mintus stood considerably taller when he hit a 27-yard field goal attempt in overtime to help the Saints beat Prairie Central, 13-7, for a share of the Corn Belt Conference title and a third straight trip to the state playoffs.
25 years ago (1982): A 30-yard touchdown pass from John Rooney to Ed Brady with 27 seconds left to play followed by a two-point conversion pass from Rooney to J.C. Anderson allowed Illinois Wesleyan to edge Carroll, 22-21, in CCIW football action.
50 years ago (1957): Pontiac flooded Normal Community right out of the Corn Belt Conference football race with a 14-0 victory on rain-swept Truman Keys Pond. It was a sad and belated homecoming for the small gathering of NCHS fans and the two ducks who sat through the steady rain which reached cloudburst stage at times.
