Livingston donors ‘Fill the Crib’
PONTIAC — Sharon Craig’s desk is filled with boxes that are overflowing with baby clothes, diapers, formula and other items. “It’s just awesome,” said Craig, who is marketing and admissions director of Livingston Manor, a nursing home owned and operated by Livingston County. “You can just go on and on with all of the items I have here.” Livingston Manor began a “Fill the Crib” campaign in August to benefit the Caring Pregnancy Center, which helps individuals with special needs. Services at the center include free pregnancy testing, infant care education and the opportunity to receive items for a baby. A baby crib was placed at the nursing home, and it was overflowing with items many times, said Craig, adding the idea for the collection came from the nursing home residents who wanted to help the community. “The residents are always wanting to come up with ideas of things to do, and how we can help somebody. So, we decided to help women in need,” she said. “The community always pulls through for the center, and it’s absolutely amazing,” added Darcy Woodburn, assistant director for the Caring Pregnancy Center. Alderman — Pontiac Mayor Scott McCoy said he hopes to have a candidate to fill the Ward 5 position on the City Council by Oct. 1. The seat was held by L. Donald Stalter until he passed away last month. McCoy said he is still in discussions with a couple of possible candidates to narrow it down to one, who he will introduce to the council, which then votes on the recommendation. Street names — The naming of the five streets down the Illinois 23 corridor did not make it on the agenda at last week’s Pontiac City Council meeting, but they will be discussed at a later date, McCoy said. Current possibilities the council already has discussed include William Harris Highway, John Laughlin Road, Middle Road, Redwood Drive and Bowery Road. Merge grant — Both the Streator high school and grade school districts last week agreed to apply for a grant that would look at how they can increase their cooperation, including possible consolidation. The study, costing up to $10,000, would decide the best means of educating the 1,000 high school and 1,400 grade school students. In related school news, the high school decided to phase out valedictorians and salutatorians over a three-year period. Problems in compiling class rankings have occupied board meetings for several years. Volunteers needed — The Light Up Streator committee is seeking volunteers to help with decorations at City Park. Halloween decorations already are up and will remain in place until November, when Christmas work begins. Volunteers can call Joe Richards at (815) 673-2008. Another try — The LaSalle County Board may be asked again to increase the local sales tax to pay for criminal prosecution and detention. A committee has heard from officials of the juvenile detention center, who said more money is needed to combat rising crime and prosecution — something the sheriff’s department and state’s attorney said the last four times such a 0.5 percentage point increase was sought. |
