PONTIAC — Joanna Rousonelos discovered her passion for floral arrangements as a teenager.

“I was always interested, especially when I was around 16, because my high school offered a floral design class, and I just loved it,” she said.

Now she is taking her love for things that bloom to a new level. This week Rousonelos opened Joanna’s Floral Creations and Gifts at 213 N. Mill St. in downtown Pontiac.

“I haven’t really made a sale yet but I do get people from the street who come in and look around,” said Rousonelos, a native of Minooka.

The shop displays a variety of designs made by Rousonelos and she likes to primarily work on arrangements that reflect the season. These days that means lots of orange and yellow flowers, both fresh and silk, to remind customers that autumn is around the corner.

Both fresh and silk arrangements typically start at $20. Rousonelos will take orders for specially designed arrangements and also handles weddings.

The business is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

Currently she is the shop’s only employee, but she plans to hire a delivery person soon.

Cheri Lambert, president and CEO of the Pontiac Area Chamber of Commerce, is excited to see a new business locate downtown.

“It’s a nice addition to the downtown area and has a quality product which is done very well,” she said.

The chamber will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
