Inaugural kite fest flying high

PONTIAC — When Ellie Alexander tells people to “go fly a kite,” she means it in a good way.

The Pontiac tourism director hopes residents will attend the first Pontiac Kite Festival on Aug. 25-26 at the Pontiac Rec Plex, a 70-acre facility off Old Airport Road in southeastern Pontiac.

Alexander hopes as many as 400 people show up and that the festival becomes an annual event.

“It will be a good family event. You can get out into the open and work together,” she said.

The event is free and participants can either bring their own kite or buy one from a supplier at the festival, she said.

Representatives from Chicago Kite and Illinois Kite Enthusiast Club will be among experts on hand to educate people about kites.

The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Alexander hopes to draw people from a 100-mile radius. August was chosen to avoid conflict with other, more established, kite festivals.

She expects some of the best kite fliers in the state and national champion kite fliers to attend.

There’s even something for those who only want to watch: A gigantic purple octopus and huge gecko kite are expected.

Alexander expects both single and quad-line kites. As far as she knows, the festival is the only one of its kind in Livingston County.

She expects it to bring back old memories for many, including herself. She remembers flying kites with her father and later with her five children.

While hoping for wind, she said, stretching the festival over two days makes it less likely to get a day without wind.
