Area cities, towns to mark Memorial Day
BLOOMINGTON -- Parades, ceremonies and a variety of other activities highlight Memorial Day activities in Central Illinois. Unless otherwise noted, the events occur Monday. Here is a town-by-town list. Bloomington: Parade, starts 9 a.m. at Front and Madison streets; heads west on Front to Lee Street, south to Wood Street and west to Miller Park. Ceremonies follow at bandstand with American Legion Department of Illinois Commander Luis Gonzalez and wreath laying and brief ceremony at Korean-Vietnam War Memorial. Rain location: National Guard Armory, 1616 S. Main St. Bloomington American Legion Louis E. Davis Post 56 ceremony, 1 p.m. Sunday, Park Hill Cemetery. Benson: 9:30 a.m., Clayton Township Cemetery with Emily Fischer and Dexter Heineke. Rain location: Benson American Legion. DeLand: 11 a.m., Goose Creek Township Cemetery by American Legion Post 102. Lunch at noon, DeLand American Legion Hall. Delavan: 9 a.m., Green Valley Cemetery; 9:30 a.m., St. Mary’s Cemetery; 9:45 a.m., Prairie Rest Cemetery; 11 a.m., Delavan Armory, with Lt. Col. Alicia Tate Nadeau. Sponsored by Delavan-Green Valley American Legion Post 382. Breakfast, 6 to 10 a.m. Eureka: 11:15 a.m., Olio Township Cemetery with Tim Meiss, Sasha Schumm, Commander Ray Reeser, the Rev. Gary Cline and emcee Dan Harrod; 21-gun salute by American Legion Post 466. Rain location: High school auditorium. Fairbury: 10:30 a.m., Graceland Cemetery. Rain location: VFW hall. Farmer City: 10 a.m., downtown park. Rain location: Farmer City American Legion. Sponsored by Joe Williams Post 55, Squadron 55, Auxiliary Unit 55, VFW Post 6190, Farmer City State Bank, and Bob and Janet Tharp. LeRoy: 8 a.m., Gilmore and Rutledge cemeteries; 9 a.m., service at memorial behind LeRoy American Legion; parade, starts at 10 a.m. from legion post around Kiwanis Park to Center Street to LeRoy High School. Buses will take people to the Oak Grove Cemetery for 10:30 a.m. service at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Lexington: 10 a.m. service, Lexington Community Center, by Elmo F. Hill American Legion Post 291. Lincoln: 10:30 a.m., Logan County Courthouse with Bob Migalich of Chatham, past state commander of the VFW. Ham and beans at the American Legion Home after the service. Mansfield: 1 p.m. May 27 at Blue Ridge Cemetery and 1:30 p.m. May 27 at Mansfield Cemetery, both by Kelso M. Garver American Legion Post 650. Pontiac: Parade lines up 9:30 a.m., Central Grade School; starts down Main Street at 10 a.m., crosses Mill Street Bridge and to South Side Cemetery. Roanoke: 11 a.m., Roanoke Township Cemetery. Rain location: American Legion building. Fund-raising breakfast, 7 to 9:30 a.m., American Legion, sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 71; parade organizes at 10:30 a.m., next to Honor Roll downtown, leaves about 10:40 a.m. Saybrook: 10:30 a.m., Riverside Cemetery then Cheneys’ Grove Township Cemetery, both by American Legion and SAL posts 427. Waynesville: 9:45 a.m. dedication service, Mrs. Hill’s Chapel, Evergreen Cemetery; military service, 10 a.m., Evergreen Cemetery, then Union Cemetery and Rock Creek Ceremony. Veterans’ and family lunch, Waynsville American Legion. All sponsored by Post 1189. Wapella: June 3, Rucker Chapel Church, Solomon neighborhood, rural Wapella. Potluck dinner, 12:30 p.m., church basement. Address, 2 p.m., in the church. Woodlawn: Flag dedication, 11:30 a.m., Woodlawn Country Club. |
