NEW 5:30 p.m. BLOOMINGTON — Southbound U.S. 51 has been reduced to one lane just south of Interstate 74 because of a car-pickup truck accident.

At 5:30 p.m., a pickup truck with front-end damage was being loaded onto a trailer. A badly damaged Volkswagen Beetle was in the ditch beside the southbound lanes.

Traffic was not backed up, but vehicles were slowing as they passed the wreck.

" The driver of the truck probably wasnt speeding. the paper edition of the pantagraph said he veered into the southbound lanes. "

" my kids where coming home on the bus and seen it.....they where scared for everyone in the car and truck. our prayers are with all of you. for everyone that travels south 51/ south main the speed limit is only 45 and signs are posted. we all go over the speed limit.....some are just taking it over board. i understand everyone wants to get where they are going but please go just alittle slower than 70, i have my kids with me when i drive on this road home and i want to get home alive and unhurt with my babies. GOD BLESS ALL! "

Bad Traffic Manners wrote on May 22, 2007 10:00 AM:

" I was also stuck in traffic due to the accident, but that’s a small price to pay to give the emergency workers the room they needed to help the victims. Unfortunately, even during serious emergencies, some people only think of themselves. While people patiently waited in the single left lane, a new maroon Dodge Ram pickup and a black BMW flew up the right lane to the stop light and then shot out in front of the rest when the light turned green. I don’t know where the BMW went, but the newer maroon extended cab Dodge pickup turned off at Heyworth. Not only was this disrespectful to the others trying to help the situation, but it was a downright dangerous stunt given the crash scene directly ahead. I can only hope that in the future, they might show some consideration for the victims and emergency workers over their own selfish impatience. Thanks to those who patiently waited and prayers to the victims and their families. "

" Can you pass along our wishes for a speedy recovery? I am a co-worker of both of them and would like to let them know that they are both on our thoughts and prayers. "

" To all that have been praying for my sister, Thank You! She was driving the VW and is pretty beat up. I want to thank all the EMTs, police officers, and witnesses on the scene. Thank you all again, God Bless. "

" We were driving by on our carpool van at about 4:45 and the ambulances had already left with the people involved-the Volkswagon was pretty smashed up-I'm guessing it rolled down the ditch several times-and the top was down on it. Traffic was backed up clear underneath the 74 overpass when we were there-it took us about 20 minutes to get from underneath the overpass to normal speed on 51. I hope everyone is alright! Your in my prayers! "

" She's doing ok. They thought at 8:30 last night the only thing that was wrong with her was a broken arm. She's doing good. She's a family friend of mine. I know she'll appreciate all the thoughts and prayers. "

I don't think it was wrote on May 22, 2007 1:57 AM:

" I don't think it was a head-on collision, but I'm not to sure, all I know is, the VW was smashed up pretty good and the truck was all smashed in at the front. It did slow down traffic for awhile, and I hope nobody was fatally injured. "

Saw the aftermath wrote on May 21, 2007 10:49 PM:

" My husband and I saw the convertible Volkswagen beetle in the ditch and the truck on the street. By the look at the windshield on the VW I couldn't tell if it was a head on or if it had rolled. If your a family member just know that their are strangers praying for the well being of those involved. My husband and I make it a point to pray for those when we hear/see an ambulance. Life is fragile. Hugs to the family and victims "
