Boys Class A Sectionals: CCHS win 1st sectional track title

Central Catholic High School won its first boys sectional track and field championship Friday at the Clinton Class A Sectional.

The Saints scored 120 points. Rochester was second at 105 with Williamsville third at 69.

Central Catholic got individual victories from Patrick Zuenik in the triple jump (40 feet, 9 inches), Ryan Waldron in the 100-meter dash (11.06), Josh Brent in the shot put (54-1) and Austin Quinn in the 1,600 (4:34.56).

Saints claiming seconds were Patrick McNeil in the long jump, Dan Curran in the 800, Daniel Burr in the 3,200 and Waldron in the 200. The Central Catholic 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relays all took seconds.

Other area winners were Clinton’s Drew Holl (21-1 in the long jump), Heyworth’s Branden Downing (15.65 in the 110 hurdles) and Heyworth’s 400 and 800 relay squads.

Also advancing with seconds were Holl in the high jump, Mount Pulaski’s Sam Hagaman in the triple jump, Heyworth’s Kyle Andreae in the 100 and Clinton’s Mark Westerfield in the 110 hurdles.

Mahomet captures Champaign title

Mahomet-Seymour Jason Seaman threw the shot put nearly eight feet beyond the state qualifying standard and the discus nearly 11 feet beyond state standards to lead the Bulldogs to the championship of the Class Champaign Central Sectional.

The Bulldogs outscored runner-up Champaign Centennial 117-101. The next closest team was Urbana at 37 points.

Seamon was joined by Justin Sebens, who also qualified for the state meet in two events — the high jump where he finished second with a leap of 6 feet, 5 inches and 3200 run, which he won in a time of 10 minutes, 2.98 seconds.

Other Bulldog qualifiers were Troy Pittman, who won the 1600, and second-place finishers Paul Zientek (200), Andrew Brewer (300 hurdles) and Tim Robberstad (pole vault).

Mahomet also advanced the 1600 and 3200 relay teams.

State qualifiers from Pontiac included Noah Dunham (800 run) and the 3200 relay team. Lincoln’s Zach Mullins was second in the triple jump.

Thompson wins twice

Tremont sophomore Parker Thompson won the 800- and 1,600-meter to lead Pantagraph area state qualifiers at the Farmington Class A Sectional.

Thompson took the 800 in 1 minute, 57.6 seconds and the 1,600 in 4:27.0.

Other area event winners were Eureka’s Wes Schmidgall in the long jump (21-3), Tremont’s Alex Lambert in the pole vault (13-9), Fieldcrest’s Brian Peterson in the 3,200 (9:36.5) and Olympia’s Austin Myers in the 300 intermediate hurdles (41.7).

The top two finishers in each event, plus anyone meeting the state qualifying standard, advanced to next weekend’s state meet at Charleston.

Tremont’s Jeremy Pflederer qualified with a second place in the 400 (50.1) and third in the 200 (22.3). Olympia’s Kameron Carpenter also advanced in two events with a second in the 300 intermediate hurdles (41.9) and a fifth in the pole vault (12-9). Fieldcrest’s Peterson advanced with a second place in the 1,600 in addition to his title in the 3,200.

Olympia took second in the team standings with 80 points, 13 behind winner Chillicothe IVC.

Tanney blazes to state

Lexington’s Alex Tanney set a meet record with a time of 4:30.30 in the 1,600-meter run to lead area qualifiers in the GCMS Class A Sectional at Gibson City.

Other area individual champions were GCMS’ Lucas Pulley in the pole vault (12-6), Prairie Central’s Tyler Popejoy in the long jump (20-11 1/2), Prairie Central’s Brennan Krenz in the 110 high hurdles (15.8), Ridgeview’s Kaleb Sosamon in the 400 (51.1) and Dwight’s Jacob Scheuer in the 300 intermediate hurdles (39.9).

Dwight also set a meet record in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:31.50.

Blue Ridge’s Smith advances

Blue Ridge sophomore Johntel Smith was the only Pantagraph area individual state qualifier at the Shelbyville Class A Sectional, placing second in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.1 seconds. Blue Ridge also won the 800 relay in 1:36.3 and was second in the 400 relay.

Blue Ridge placed fourth with 43 points. Monticello won with 143.

Delavan’s Camp qualifies in 2 events

Delavan finished fifth in the Class A Sectional meet at Lewiston, ending with a team total of 40 points.

Jeff Camp advanced to next week’s state meet with first-place finishes in the 1,600 and 3200 for Delavan, finishing with respective times of 4:45.7 and 10:10.9. Illini Central’s Mitchel List took second in both races, with respective times of 4:52.7 and 10:38.7.

Illini Central also took second place in the 3200 relay (8:41.4)

Caleb Smith of Delavan tied for second in the pole vault with 12 feet, 3 inches, while Sam Kirby of Illini Central took fourth in discus, surpassing the state standard of 143 feet by 1 inch.
