Saluto calls off 'Farm' girls calendar
Advertisement

BLOOMINGTON — There will be no “Women of State Farm” calendar to benefit New Orleans.

Citing free speech and community interest, photographer Anthony Saluto said Wednesday he has dropped plans for a provocative calendar featuring female employees at State Farm Insurance Cos.

Saluto said he is considering another calendar project but it won’t include State Farm.

“Freedom of speech is alive and well in Bloomington-Normal. And in the best interest of the community, I am canceling the women of State Farm edition of my calendarzine projects,” Saluto said in a statement e-mailed to the Pantagraph.

Saluto would not elaborate on the meaning of his statement and wouldn’t say if pressure from State Farm made him cancel the calendar.

He announced his calendar plans last week and quickly received a letter from State Farm, informing him that he couldn’t use State Farm’s name for commercial gain.

State Farm spokesman Phil Supple confirmed the letter Wednesday but did not know Saluto changed his mind about the calendar project.

Saluto planned a calendar of nearly nude female State Farm employees to benefit artists and photographers stricken by Hurricane Katrina. He’d already received several applications to pose.

Provocative calendars have become a hit in the fund-raising world, fueled by a 2000 calendar of 50- to 70-somethings in England who posed nude for cancer research.

Those photo shoots inspired the 2003 British film “Calendar Girls” and raised around $2.55 million through calendar sales and book and film royalties.

" You call me a "grumpy old man" and this isn't rude? And calling me an "old timer" isn't rude? You're obviously one of the new breed of know-it-alls. This discussion started out being about the calendar of the SF girls that has been tabled, thank goodness. I for one am glad that the sexist idea of the calendar was tabled. And to let you know, I'm a 60 year old grandmother with almost 28 years of service at The Farm before I retired. "

" Hey old timer, you've been out of it a while, haven't you? First of all, it's not against policy to surf. It is allowed over lunch and is to be used primarily for business use otherwise. Note, primarily. Second, see the time stamp? Ever heard of people working hours other than 8-4:15? I think it's a good thing you retired. I hate dealing with grumpy old men like you. "

" Does anyone out here condemning people for posting "during work hours" ever think maybe people posting have alternate work hours or have vacation days? Not everyone who works for State Farm (or many companies) works an 8-4 Monday through Friday shift. People out here are so quick to make assumptions! I work a split shift and have middays free. Guess I shouldn't be on the Pantagraph during midday because someone might think I'm posting here instead of working. Yikes. "

Why is it censorship protect a name which you own the rights to? Why are so many people in this town bitter about State Farm? They are directly responsible for most of the jobs in this area and they pay decent wages! "

Other insurance companies wrote on Jan 18, 2007 11:04 AM:

" As someone else astutely noted out here, State Farm is NOT the only insurer that is embroiled in legal battles over the situation in NO. We just hear about State Farm in the news more because of the size of the company and the fact they are local news here, so the Pantagraph keeps writing about it. Everyone goes after the company with perceived "deep pockets". If you have a specific complaint or concern about how things were handled in New Orleans, perhaps you should write a letter to State Farm or contact their media spokesperson rather than speculate and condemn without really having all the facts. Or travel to NO and sit in a courtroom and listen to all the evidence, same as with any other legal situation that makes the news. You might want to contact other insurance companies as well, since I'm sure SF didn't insure 100% of the properties in LA and MS. "

It's beneficial and is not a "clubby" thing that SF uses to try to create an elite group of people; it's a work tool any company can use. As for the calendar, the majority of comments out here were either against the calendar or sounded like they were written by prepubescent boys. There was not a lot of mature support for it. That is my take on what Saluto meant by his comment about freedom of speech being alive and well here. "

" Maybe some will see me as an old coot complaining about young women and their looks, but that's far from true. State Farm doesn't need this type of adverse publicity, there's already enough of it going around. Nudie calendars are sexist, so if the project had moved forward, it would have been appropriate for both men AND women, attired appropriately for the workplace, to have been in the calendar. Notice I said "attired appropriately" - meaning no navels showing, no jeans barely hanging onto hips, no cargo pants, no flip flops which seems to be the attire accepted there now. I'm happy to be retired and away from the flagrantly ignored rules of proper dress in the workplace. "

I am proud of my body and could very well pose for the calendar but I have more respect for myself and those women that do NOT need to show the world their goods. Especially if you have children. I am not against doing the calendar but I am happy that State Farm didn't want their name used in a discusting mannor. They are a family oriented company and I like that! NO I don't work for them either... but now I wouldn't mind working there knowing it is a respectable place to work! If this joker wants to do a calendar, have the women pose in nice suits or something. Those women are more classy and beautiful to me! :) "
